Mastic Gum
A very hard resin gum chewed to train the masseter muscle. Modest at best, and not risk-free.
Mastic gum is a hard resin from the mastic tree, chewed in this community to load the masseter — the main chewing muscle at the jaw angle. The logic is straightforward: the masseter is a skeletal muscle, and skeletal muscle hypertrophies under load, so heavy chewing may slightly increase its size over time. What it does not do is change the mandible itself. Any effect is limited to soft-tissue bulk at the jaw angle and is far smaller than the changes produced by lowering body fat.
It is one of the most-discussed jaw interventions and sits in an unusual position: the mechanism is plausible, the effect is small, and the downside is real if you overdo it.
- Masseter size
- Jaw angle fullness
- That it grows or reshapes jawbone — it does not.
- That harder and longer is better — excessive chewing is the main route to injury.
- That it substitutes for body composition — it does not come close.
- Get body composition, posture and neck development handled first
- If you use it, keep sessions short and stop at any joint discomfort
- Judge results over months, not weeks, and keep expectations modest
- Start with very short sessions
- Stop immediately if your jaw joint hurts
- Sustainable body composition
- Consistent posture and neck work
- Chewing for long sessions daily
- Ignoring early jaw pain or clicking
- Excessive chewing can contribute to temporomandibular joint pain, headaches, tooth wear and muscle asymmetry if you favour one side. Persistent jaw pain or clicking warrants a dentist or specialist.
Put this into a system
Stop reading, start doing. Run a protocol that operationalises this.
Gonial Angle
The angle where the body of the lower jaw meets the ascending ramus.
Jawline Definition
The visual sharpness of the mandibular border, driven by bone, body fat and soft-tissue levels.
Bigonial Width
The distance between the angles of the lower jaw, influencing lower-face width.
Mentalis Strain
Visible tension or puckering of the chin muscle when closing the lips.
